Class Descriptions

Classical ballet, also called romantic ballet, is a system of dance based on formalized movements and positions of the arms, feet, and body designed to enable the dancer to move with the greatest possible agility, control, speed, lightness, and grace. At BDC we teach the ADV (Australian Dance Vision) Syllabus and students are able to pace themselves through a number of exercises to develop Strength, Flexibility, Musicality and Performance qualities. Students have the option to do Exams and be assessed on their work.

Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques.
Lyrical dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion.  A lyrical dancer’s movements attempt to show the meaning of the music and are often danced to the rhythm of the lyrics . Lyrical jazz is a very passionate and emotional dance style. It portrays certain emotions such as love, and tells a story through every movement made.

Contemporary dance is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world.  A blend of Ballet and modern dance. It builds a strong centre and combines precision leg work with fluidity of the torso. Contemporary dance encourages self expression, natural movement and personal interpretation.

Jazz dancing, and its steps and style, originated from the dancing of African Americans that were brought to America as slaves. Originally, the term jazz dance encompassed any dance done to jazz music, including both tap dance and jitterbug.

Over time, a clearly defined jazz genre emerged, changing from a street dance to a theatrical dance performed on stage by professionals. Some scholars and dancers, especially Swing and Lindy Hop dancers, still regard the term jazz dance. It is a genre which has produced specific styles from famous choreographers such as Bob Fosse, Jack Cole, and Katherine Dunham. Jazz dance can refer to these specific styles or allude to theatrical or character dance.
